The Kindergarten curriculum in the Brazilian Common Curriculum Framework is organised into five experience fields, for which learning and development objectives are defined. These fields are designed to reflect the concrete situations and experiences of children's daily lives, intertwining them with knowledge that forms part of the cultural heritage. The naming and definition of these fields relate to fundamental knowledge and what should be taught to children.
Elementary School is part of the foundation for subsequent stages of basic education. During this period, children develop academically, personally and socially. They learn to read and write, and learn mathematical and scientific principles, as well as the notions of space and time. They also develop other languages, such as aesthetics, music, technology, body language and spoken language, including German and English.
Middle School continues the organic and progressive set of essential learning experienced by students. This is where the progression of work aimed at developing general skills in our young people, including abstraction and cognitive flexibility, begins. This process, combined with the deepening of the work done with the socio-emotional skills of self-knowledge, self-care, an empathetic look at diversity, flexibility and resilience, guided by the development of a systemic view, integrates the content worked on in Middle School.
High School is the conclusive stage of Basic Education, as the students refine and deepen their knowledge and begin to outline their future from choices in their favorite areas. Besides a General Education, uniform for all students, High School also allows to follow the Learning Paths. They comprise the flexible part of the curriculum, in which students make choices according to their interests and goals, link educational experiences with their contemporary reality and develop new competences based on the following pillars: Scientific Investigation, Creative Processes, Socio-cultural Mediation and Intervention, and Entrepreneurship.

Upon choosing a Learning Path, students have the opportunity to prepare a thematic project, which will lead to studies and research by considering global perspectives and deploying technology resources. In each project, they will be assisted not only by their teachers, but also by national and international companies or universities in order to present their ideas in an innovative way. Optionally, the students can have an international experience to go to the bottom of their research topic. The project is finished with the Educational Path Show, with performances in different languages including research and innovation proposals as well as economically, socially and environmentally relevant projects.

Learning Pathways

High School Learning Pathways are a flexible part of the mandatory curriculum, in which students make choices according to their interests, skills and goals, connect educational experiences with the contemporary reality and develop new skills according to the following axes: Scientific investigation, Creative Processes, Mediation and Socio-cultural Intervention, and Entrepreneurship.

Upon choosing a Learning Pathway, students have the opportunity to prepare a thematic project, which will lead to research and studies considering global perspectives and using technology resources.

In each project, they will be assisted not only by their teachers, but also by national and international companies or universities in order to present their ideas in an innovative way. Optionally, the students can have an international experience to go to the bottom of their research topic. The project is finished with the Learning Pathways Exhibition, with presentations in different languages including research and innovation proposals with an economical, social and environmental relevance.

Global Videoconferences and Masterclasses

This is an innovative initiative by Colégio Visconde de Porto Seguro, which promotes meetings between its students and leading specialists in the different subjects covered, as well as between children and young students from Brazil and other parts of the world. In these meetings, children learn through real communication situations, talk, debate, establish connections with different realities, develop a sense of global citizenship and perfect their speaking skills in English and German.

Place-Based Study

Through this interdisciplinary approach offered from Elementary School on, the students participate in immersions that bring them close to real-life contexts, allowing for more meaningful learning processes. Based on well-thought-out plans and investigation tasks, all the trips are organised by specialist companies and escorted by an ambulance and security staff.

Admission Exams Season

Porto offers many possibilities for our students to make their dreams come true and choose the desired university on their way to professional success. At the end of the 12th grade of High School, year after year, students from Colégio Visconde de Porto Seguro conquer places in the best higher education institutions in Brazil and in the world.

Abitur

After the 12th grade of High School, students study for another school year and can proceed to Abitur’s “Deutsche Internationale Abitursprüfung” (DIAP). The exam that marks the completion of High School in Germany is required by every German educational institution. This title allows admission to German universities and most European countries, the United States, and a growing number of universities in Brazil. The Abitur is taken only once, and its score is valid for life. The certificate contains all subjects and grades from the last two academic years.

Since 2016, renowned Brazilian institutions have started to accept the Abitur as an option to enrol in their undergraduate courses, without the need for an admission exam. Currently, the diploma is accepted* by FGV, ESPM (SP and RJ), FIA, FAAP, Centro Universitário Belas Artes, Faculdade Albert Einstein, Universidade Presbiteriana Mackenzie, FEI, PUC/RJ, among others.

*It is recommended to check, each semester, whether these universities will accept the Abitur in their selection processes for the period.

Universities around the world

With the goal of advising students who wish to obtain the best opportunities in Higher Education abroad, from Middle School onwards Porto offers guidance, support and monitoring for international university admission processes in the following countries:

United States, Canada, Spain, Portugal, United Kingdom, Netherlands, among others.
